• Began his illustrious footballing career as a goalkeeper (!) for his primary school at Milton Bank.
• Played for Possil Park YMCA while at High Possil Secondary School.
• Won the Scottish Schools Cup in 1966 representing Glasgow Schools.
• Represented Scottish U-15 Schools in 1966.
• Played for Glasgow United from 1966 to 1967.
• Signed provisional forms for Glasgow Celtic FC in May 1967.
• Loaned to Cumbernauld United for season 1967/68. Scored 37 goals.
